The mechanism of action is thought to be anti-inflammatory, but Plaquenil also seems to reduce sensitivity to sunlight. It has also been noted recently that smoking reduces the effectiveness of Plaquenil in treating lupus, thus, smoking cessation should be instituted in all patients taking Plaquenil. 3. I have been taking plaquenil for uctd for about 6 years or so. Can't live without it. Supposed to take couple months to kick in but worked for me within 2 days. If I miss a dose, I feel it a day and a half later- my legs like lead, really lousy, etc. I am extremely sensitive and responsive to it.

Anwar Nassar. Munther Khamashta, in Handbook of Systemic Autoimmune Diseases, 2017. 18.4.8 Hydroxychloroquine. Hydroxychloroquine, an antimalarial drug, is traditionally used in the treatment of SLE. Its effectiveness in treating APS has been previously questioned. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is considered an older DMARD disease modifying anti-rheumatic drug. Plaquenil was actually first classified as an antimalarial drug, but it is also used to treat certain rheumatic and autoimmune conditions which are unrelated to malaria. Generally, Plaquenil is a treatment option as monotherapy used alone for mild rheumatoid arthritis or as combination. Hydroxychloroquine also known by its popular brand name Plaquenil is an oral medication that is commonly used to treat a variety of autoimmune diseases including systemic lupus, dermatomyositis, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s and many other conditions as well. In the field of hair loss, conditions such as lichen planopilaris, frontal fibrosing alopecia and discoid lupus are frequently treated with hydroxychloroquine.

Plaquenil & Weight Gain/Loss Except it didn't and I still loss weight. I did take Plaquenil on its own a few years back when they thought I had SLE but didn't meet the criteria and I vaguely recall some suppression of appetite. After doing some reading, it turns out people could also lose weight during an active episode so not 100% sure what caused the weight loss.
