    How to wean off hydroxychloroquine

It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability.

Weaning from hydroxychloroquine. Plaquenil lingers in the system at least 50 days and cannot be taken while on the MP. Dr. Blaney reports he starts his patients on Benicar while they are waiting for Plaquenil to clear their system and has seen no adverse events. He prefers to wait a couple months before starting minocycline. Mar 18, 2011 It's ok to stop plaquenil without weaning, but I do recommend that if you feel you can wait til Monday, wait, and talk with your rheumy then. I felt that plaquenil wasn't helping, and was causing digestive problems for me, so with my dr. ok, I went off it. After two weeks off, I discovered it had been doing some good on the joint and muscle pain. Aug 26, 2016 Plaquenil damps down the reactiveness of the receptors that send out your “fighters”, which in us is overactive. Rather than strangling the life out of your immune system like steroid meds do, it attenuates the function to closer to normal. Over time it can slightly lower your white cell count.

Today, it is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, some symptoms of lupus, childhood arthritis (or juvenile idiopathic arthritis) and other autoimmune diseases. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria.

  6. Hi everybody! I recently went to the doc and he recommended that I try cutting my Plaquenil in half from 400mg to 200mg/day. I have been on it since March, 2002. It's been about a week and I have noticed a few slight changes, mainly a little stiffness in my fingers and feeling a little fatigued.

Hello all, I am currently new to this site and ran across the discussion about stopping Plaquenil. I have been taking Plaquenil for about 8-9 months and thought that it was not helping me because I still have a fair amount of joint pain, fatigue, muscle pain and so many other issues. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush, break, or chew it. Take this medicine with meals or milk to lessen stomach upset, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Keep using this medicine for the full treatment time, even if you feel better after the first few doses. Re Let me tell you what weaning down from Plaquenil is like. Reply #32 on January 12, 2012, AM I would gladly take feeling better over my hair at this point. Plaquenil always helped me with my hair, you may want to give it more time and it might level off, if indeed, its the plaquenil.
