Prednisone is used alone or with other medications to treat the symptoms of low corticosteroid levels (lack of certain substances that are usually produced by the body and are needed for normal body functioning). Prednisone is also used to treat other conditions in patients with normal corticosteroid levels. These conditions include certain types of arthritis; severe allergic reactions; multiple sclerosis (a disease in which the nerves do not function properly); lupus (a disease in which the body attacks many of its own organs); and certain conditions that affect the lungs, skin, eyes, kidneys blood, thyroid, stomach, and intestines. Prednisone is also sometimes used to treat the symptoms of certain types of cancer. Prednisone is in a class of medications called corticosteroids. It works to treat patients with low levels of corticosteroids by replacing steroids that are normally produced naturally by the body. It works to treat other conditions by reducing swelling and redness and by changing the way the immune system works.
Some physicians provide asthma patients with emergency supplies of oral prednisone tablets, to be taken in accordance with a specific short-term protocol. These high doses compromise the immune system and the patient becomes vulnerable to opportunist infections. This is a mixed-bag because without the prednisone the patient may die from lack of oxygen. In any event, the esophagus is very vulnerable to infection when eroded by stomach acid oozing through the esophageal sphincter. This is common with GERDS and acid-reflux syndromes. Normally the esophagus and trachea are very resistant to infection If there is acid refluc, the situation changes. The acid destroys the barrier to bacterial infection, and together with the prednisone the patient becomes prone to a sore throat, and infection which may rapidly progress to the lung. My speaking voice is still quite clear but I don't want to sing until the pain is gone. I have a concert scheduled for 10 days from now with rehearsal starting in 6 days. I'm not sure when and if I should start a course of medication My doctor has read about it being used for this purpose but wasn't sure what to prescribe. Does this sound reasonable and if I'm taking it for only 5 days, do I need to worry about weaning myself from it (I've read about that online)? Usually a Medrol Dose pack is used ....1st day: 2 tablets before breakfast, 1 tablet after lunch and after supper, and 2 tablets at bedtime. 1 tablet after lunch and after supper, and 2 tablets at bedtime. 3rd day: 1 tablet before breakfast, after lunch, after supper and at bedtime. I've read that it can cause sleep disruption and an upset stomach. 4th day: 1 tablet before breakfast, after lunch and at bedtime. I think I'll just wait it out until a couple of days before the concert if I'm still experiencing inflammation. I feel a little better educated about this medication. Your Dr's order for 5 tabs per day @ 5 mg per tab sounds about right.
Prednisone is part of a class of drugs called immunosuppressants. It suppresses the body's immune response and reduces inflammation in your lungs. Because inflammation is the precursor to fibrosis scarring, we hope prednisone will prevent the formation of lung fibrosis and allow the inflamed lung to return to normal. This past week my throat feels like it`s closing wehn I take the Prednisone. I have read many blogs from people that have had the same problem and everyone says it can`t be caused by the Prednisone. Why then, do I not have the problem until 15 minutes after I take the Prednisone in the morning.
