Hi there, I've been prescribed diflucan 200 mg/day for nipple thrush. I went to this site and it was marked as safe while breastfeeding, so I took one dose earlier this morning. Later I read about this being a dangerous medication (arrythmias, liver toxicity) and that large amounts went into breastmilk! I'm already panicking and wondering if I should pump and dump until blood levels decrease? I'm really anxious here because we've been struggling with lacth problems and I absolutely want to avoid nipple confusion (if I have to pump and dump). Any medication and breastfeeding questions can also be directed to a LLL Leader or these folks: are now open to answer calls Monday-Friday 8am-5pm central time. Please contact us at (806)-352-2519."If you have thrush, baby needs to be treated as well, even if baby is assymptomatic. And fluconazole (aka Diflucan) is one of the suggested treatments FOR BABY. I have a yeast infection (or so they think) on my breasts/in my breasts and my doc gave me a cream (nystatin) that did not work. Now they have prescribed me Diflucan (Fluconazole) and I am freaking out about taking it while breastfeeding. THey gave me 5 pills to take over 5 days (one every 3 days). On the paperwork it says " Fluconazole is unlikely to harm a nursing baby, but consult doctor before breastfeeding." I am so freaked out. I could give her formula, but I would have to do that for like 15 to 17 days. My PED seems to think breastfeeding is more important. I think almost all medications have that disclaimer. can someone make me feel better about taking this drug and breastfeeding?? I'm pretty sure I saw something on my prenatals about consulting with one's doctor prior to taking if pregnant or breastfeeding. Actually both my children had to take Diflucan themselves in addition to me taking it orally for two weeks while nursing. It's actually a good thing that the baby is getting some from your milik to help kill off the yeast that is traveling back and forth. (Yes, really.) Definitely make sure your baby is treated in some manner as well.
