Minocycline versus Doxycycline in the Treatment of Acne vulgaris

—Both minocycline and doxycycline are completely absorbed when administered orally and seem to reach therapeutic concentrations in CSF, in contrast to the older tetracyclines [1, 2]. Cunha points out in his letter [3], earlier studies have shown that minocycline is markedly more lipid soluble than doxycycline [4]. However, some of the reported adverse reactions to minocycline therapy in humans may cause concern. Minocycline seems to cause teeth discoloration even in young adults; other described adverse effects are discoloration of the skin, nails, sclerae, and conjunctivae [1]. These side effects were reported after ≥3 weeks of minocycline therapy, and the risk of adverse effects after shorter courses has not been fully elucidated. Furthermore, vertigo, ataxia, and dizziness have been described during minocycline therapy [5, 6]. These CNS symptoms must be considered a major disadvantage for minocycline therapy, in particular for patients with neurological signs and symptoms, as in Lyme neuroborreliosis. Tooth and bone deposition is less common with doxycycline than with other tetracyclines [1, 7]. This lesson is going to go over some of the similarities and differences between two medications called doxycycline and minocycline. You'll learn differences such as their time to peak action and labeled uses. Two of the medications that might be used to treat this deadly disease are called doxycycline and minocycline. One of the deadliest bacterial diseases we know of is anthrax. Let's find out more about their differences in this lesson. S., some of the brand name medications that include doxycycline include Acticlate, Adoxa, Monodox, and Vibramycin. Similarly, some of the brand name medications that contain minocycline include Minocin and Solodyn. Both of them are antibiotics, medications that target bacteria. And both of them belong to a class of antibiotics known as tetracyclines. You can easily remember this by spotting the fact that both end in '-cycline', which is also the suffix of tetracycline. Specifically, they bind with the 30S and potentially the 50S ribosomal subunits of the cell in order to stop the production of proteins. You already learned in the intro that both of these medications can be used to treat anthrax.

The American Heartworm Society currently recommends the use of a monthly macrocyclic lactone, a 28-day course of 10 mg/kg doxycycline BID, and the 3-dose protocol of melarsomine dihydrochloride for the treatment of canine heartworm disease. Doxycycline is necessary for the reduction of the bacterium Thirty-two heartworm-positive dogs were randomized to receive 10 mg/kg or 5 mg/kg of either doxycycline or minocycline for 28 days BID, for a total of 8 dogs per experimental group. All dogs received 6 months of Heartgard Plus® (ivermectin/pyrantel) and the 3-dose protocol of 2.5 mg/kg melarsomine dihydrochloride. Blood samples were collected prior to the initiation of treatment, every 7 days throughout tetracycline treatment, and then monthly thereafter until the dog tested negative for the presence of heartworm antigen. DNA was isolated from circulating microfilarial samples and q PCR was performed on each sample. A greater number of dogs in the 10 mg/kg doxycycline and minocycline treated groups experienced gastrointestinal side effects as compared to the 5 mg/kg doxycycline and minocycline treated groups. All eight dogs in the 10 mg/kg doxycycline-treated group tested negative for the presence of DNA by 28 days post-tetracycline treatment.
